Too often, we see government agencies, organizations and entities pay farmers for performing a practice on their land. These practices may include planting cover crops, seeding perennials in a riparian area, using no-till planting, etc., but once the monetary incentives are no longer available, farmers stop using those practices.
Why? Regenerative practice abandonment occurs because farmers and ranchers cannot implement what they do not know and understand. We know this because retention rates of practices, once monetary incentives are removed, are between 8-15 percent. By contrast, producer retention rates of practices, when combined with UA’s educational components, are over 85 percent.
Education and understanding form a critical foundation for the implementation of the soil health principles and adaptive grazing rules to drive the ecosystem processes and ensure long-term ecological advancement on farms and ranches.
